“Seoul Food” The Movie! Exploring Culinary Delights At Street Level! Plus A “Pop-Up” K-Pop Performance!

Ready For Some Unique Street Food?

I love to travel. I’ve been able to visit some unique places, such as one of my favorite adventures, the incredible city and food of Seoul, South Korea!

Seoul South Korea at night

One of the most beautiful sights is Seoul at night…it’s a huge metropolis that feels like a neighborhood…filled with incredible billboards and lights which you can see from high above, and a bustling street scene below – and you never know when you will turn the corner and come across a K-Pop band performing live outside:

What an exciting way to begin a trip!

Whenever we traveled, we ALWAYS ate the local food – and in this case, that meant a lot of korean BBQ:

Who Wants Some Bibimbop!

No, this isn’t the name of an early Hanson CD – Bibimbap is a signature Korean dish. The word literally means “mixed rice”. Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste). A raw or fried egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions. The ingredients are stirred together thoroughly just before eating.

We grilled our own meat, added one of dozens of side dishes like kimchi, and ate our way through the city…which is hard to do considering the size of the place!

Seoul Street Food

Seoul is the capital and largest city in South Korea, with a population of more than 10 million. One day I took a walk and found myself in some incredible neighborhoods.

Eating Seoul’s Street Food!

Yes, bacon has shown its face halfway around the world! These are bacon-wrapped hot dogs, one of many street treats we sampled in Seoul!

As you can see, the street food was plentiful…with a sweet and spicy sauce that was delicious slathered on all sorts of meat – and remember, you can also just order your corn dog embedded with fries:

The street food in Seoul was unique – in fact, as unique as the city itself…the streets were packed with people…and you could find yourself on any small side street filled with tiny shops and food carts cooking up all sorts of delights:

Tie Your Fish Up!

I also found a great Seoul street market – a fascinating place to wander…where locals shop for all sorts of unique items, like fish that has been tied up with rope, or dried and flattened in a fan shape…

The Noryangjin Fish Market!

I loved this place – a huge, bustling fish market where they sold a number of unique items, like piles of dried fish, plus tied up fresh fish as well – nicely bundled in bright yellow rope to carry home easily!

I loved wandering through this massive fish market – which led me to make a short movie trailer for a documentary I’m considering:

Seoul Food – the Movie!

Thanks to the fun iMovie software, I was able to put together this short movie trailer for the project – enjoy:

I must warn you that more of that kind of stuff is coming, including the legendary Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo:

My wife Alex and I went to have “sushi for breakfast” here – a really unique experience! See that story by clicking here:

One last thing: as I was re-watching that K-Pop street performance, it reminded me of the “Pop Idol” rehearsal we stumbled on in Tokyo:

I managed to shoot a little bit of it as well – click here for that story:

Seoul was really special: incredible food and people, and I will always remember this trip..let me know if you’ve wandered down streets like these!

  1. Hi John, I enjoy your posts about south Korea as it reminds me of the month I spent there in my 20s. Such an interesting place to visit.

    • Robbie, I had such a great time and selfishly, it was all paid form by my company so even better, because not only was it free, but when you film TV you get into places that aren’t easy to navigate as a tourist!

  7. John, I would happily try most if not all of that food, but K-Pop leaves me cold, sorry.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Pete, it’s the most disposable pop there is, very similar to all of the n’syncs and spice girls of our world…however, it was fascinating to come across it happening on a street corner stage outside – on a pretty cold night! Thanks for commenting!
