Welcome To Mt. Fuji!
Well, it’s a bit off in the distance, but this was my shot of the mountain from my hotel in Tokyo…can’t wait go go back to this magical city, and also to finally explore more of the country.
Luckily, the intrepid Reporters at SoraNews24.com want to share life in the mountain’s majestic shadow!

This is the town of Shizuoka, just about two hours south of Tokyo.
It’s right on the ocean, but here’s the reason you want to visit:
Yes, Mt. Fuji stares down at you from a height of 12,388 feet!

Cue The “Lenticular!”
This type of cloud formation is called a lenticular cloud, but in this case the Japanese term, tsurushigumo, or “hanging cloud,” might be easier to mentally grasp.
I’d never heard of a “hanging cloud”, but if you google it, there are some incredible shots!
This is one reason I check out the SoraNews24 website regularly – because they have such entertaining stories from Japan and Asia!

I have been to Tokyo five times now, and can never get enough of the night life:
That includes the “Golden Gai” bar district – more than 250 bars in just over three city blocks!

Great post, John! Mt. Fuji juxtaposed against city life in Tokyo is quite the contrast. I was not familiar with the term “hanging cloud” until your post. What a remarkable phenomenon!

What a beautiful mountain! And the lenticular clouds over it are spectacular! We get them over Rainier too but I’ve never seen them like that before! If I ever make it to Japan, I’ve got to visit the town the mountain looms over.

You both need to go to Japan…the trains there are amazingly on time and clean, so you can go to Osaka, Kyoto and Fuji in just a few hours and watch the countryside the entire way….and Tokyo is incredible – once in a lifetime sort of thing…we have your entire guide of what to see and do!

I have never seen such amazing clouds, John. Our planet is so full of amazing surprises. I enjoyed your pictures of Tokyo too. Ironically, I’m reading a book about post WWII Japan at the moment.

John, I had to look up whether or not Mt Fuji was active. I found this.
‘Mount Fuji is an active volcano that last erupted in 1707. On December 16, 1707, scientists recorded the last confirmed eruption of Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest point. Fuji has erupted at various times starting around 100,000 years ago—and is still an active volcano today.’
Maybe not a great idea to live so close to it? 🙂

Good point Pete! My wife is having Stanley Tucci on her talk show soon, and we got an advance look at his travel show for CNN – it’s terrific. He’s near Mt. Vesuvius – which also blew up in Italy in the past century to massive damage as well!
