“I Feel The Need…The Need For Speed!”
It was one of the most iconic movie lines of the 80’s – and it captured EXACTLY the energy rush that filled movie theaters when the smash hit “Top Gun” exploded on screens in 1986!
Now, 34 years later, an explosive new memoir looks at the film from an Actor’s perspective – just as we prepare for a sequel to hit screens!
Time for our “Cult Movie Monday” to jump on the “Wednesday Bookmobile!”
First, “Cult Movie Monday” Celebrates “Top Gun!”
One of the biggest hits of that era, “Top Gun” was a worldwide smash hit and cemented Tom Cruise’s status as the biggest star of his generation!
It all began with the film’s title Card:
On March 3, 1969 the United States Navy established an elite school for the top one percent of its pilots. Its purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial combat and to insure that the handful of men who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world. They succeeded. Today, the Navy calls it Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call it: TOP GUN.
These young hot shots at the United States Navy’s elite fighter weapons school competed with each other to be best in their class, and one daring young pilot named “Maverick” learned a few things from a civilian instructor that were not taught in the classroom!
Here is the original trailer:
Val Kilmer – “Iceman” – Speaks!
And now, one of Cruise’s co-stars from the original film speaks out about working with the star!
Val Kilmer has had a unique career in many respects, including playing “Iceman” in “Top Gun”, and now he is telling that story, including what it was like to work with Cruise!
As Newser reports:
Val Kilmer is out with a memoir, “I’m Your Huckleberry”, the title taken from the famous line he uttered in Tombstone. And while the book touches on his throat cancer and his high-profile relationships with the likes of Cher and Cindy Crawford, per ABC News, an excerpt in the Daily Beast focuses solely on his iconic role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun, opposite Tom Cruise. “I didn’t want the part,” he writes. “I didn’t care about the film. The story didn’t interest me.” His agent talked him into the audition, where he read his lines “indifferently” and was surprised to be informed the part was his. “I know that the script is insufficient, but it will get better, Val,” director Tony Scott told him. “Wait until you see these jets. They take your breath away.” It was Scott’s passion, writes Kilmer, that sold him.
Kilmer has some great inside stories about partying in nearby San Diego with other members of the film crew.
“Tom refrained from our revelry, with good reason,” he recalls. “From day one, he was laser-focused on a singular goal: to become the greatest action hero in the history of film. He was up nights learning lines; he spent every waking hour perfecting his stunts.” All this was admirable, writes Kilmer, but even “even more admirable is the fact that he achieved his goal.”
I have met Cruise several times, and he is one of the most polite, engaging and genuinely warm people I have met. He takes the time to introduce himself to the entire crew. A truly class act.
Kilmer has had a rollercoaster career, and was one of Hollywood’s most notorious lothsarios as well.
I look forward to reading the rest of Kilmer’s memoir, as he opens up about many personal details, including being Cher’s “boy toy” early on in his career!
And, almost 35 years later, the “Top Gun” sequel will fly into theaters – pandemic willing – at the end of the year! It will continue to tell the story of Maverick, and Tom Cruise is back in that iconic role!
Here is the new trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick”:
“Top Gun: Maverick” was scheduled for this summer, but has been shifted back to December 23 due to the Coronavirus…it will, no doubt, be a huge hit based on the fan base that still exists around “Top Gun!”
Back to Tom Cruise: this sequel comes as the Actor has returned to form, primarily in the ongoing series of “Mission: Impossible” films – but he also is making terrific dramas like this one:
“American Made” is based on a true story, and Cruise is in a cockpit again – this is a really good film and worth seeking out – check out the trailer here:

This is quite fascinating to me. Top Gun is style over substance. Pure pop soda cinema like Rocky IV. I didn’t grew up on Top Gun, I saw it in the mid90s and was pretty disappointed about the plot. But it was part of a culture that I’m kind of nostalgia about. I think I like Rocky IV because I saw it a few years younger. I get why some people love it. I watched it recently and really admire the visual and aural storytelling from Tony Scott. That opening is just brilliant! But I don’t think of the first film as a great classic so it’s interesting to admit I find myself pumped after that first trailer. It leant into the look of the original a bit too much but it was exciting to see those money shots of the cast in the jets. I’d really love it if Cruise addressed his age in this film and there are hints of that. Clint Eastwood made a service comedy at the same point in his career with Heartbreak Ridge. It would be great if Maverick sees Maverick reevaluating his wife as he trains the next generation of Top Guns. I’m not sure they’ll do that. Cruise has settled into action superhero but I’m looking forward to the next stage of his career and this could be where it starts.

Terrific insight….the 80’s were infused with style and gloss, making the films of that era very “dated”…

I still love them though John. I even argue some of them hold up. Highlander for example.

Agree – it’s the ones like “Red Dawn” that seem very “of their time” – “Red Heat” as well

That seems fair. John Julius was an interesting guy. I also love Commando for action movies of that era.

Great post! I had an 80s phase in middle school, where I downloaded as much music and watched as many cult classic movies as possible. I remember starting Top Gun, and not getting through. I’ll have to try again sometime soon! I enjoy most of Tom Cruise’s movies, and the book sounds incredibly interesting. Thank you for sharing!

I’m a true blue Tom Cruise fan. He’s my age and we’ve grown up together. I, sitting in the audience clapping, and he, on the screen impressing me with his stunts and action thrills. I don’t suppose Val Kilmer is rejoining Tom in the reboot, but I understand. My favorite Val K. film is The Ghost and the Darkness. He was soooo gorgeous back then.

I’m doing a post about “Ghost And Darkness” next week – I saw the real lions stuffed in the Field Museum! Cruise is one of the classiest stars I ever met….

Me, too. They are so small, aren’t they? I’ve seen the film probably ten times. I just love everything about it.

Yes, I had to look it up to make sure they were the real ones!

A classic for sure. Val has been known for being ‘difficult’, for lack of a better word, but I saw an article about his memoir recently along with him saying something about aliens, being given a big heart, and other oddities. Makes me kinda want to read the book more (which may be the point of the weirdness, unless that’s all genuine).

He is quirky to the extreme, and I chose to leave out anything about the documentary “Lost Souls”, which was the disastrous filming of “The Island Of Dr. Moreau” – Marlon Brando was the biggest jerk in the world and Val jumped right in to torture the Director as well..shameful

We watched it a month ago – talk about a “pure 80’s” film! I’ve met Tom Cruise on a few occasions and he is genuinely the nicest, most professional person you will ever meet…polite, introduces himself to the entire crew, acts genuinely interested in talking to you…a real class act.

oh, yes, it’s all 80s for sure, and good to hear about him

I must be one of the few who thought Top Gun was rather ‘silly’ and jingoistic. I doubt I will be watching a sequel, though I have a lot of time for Val Kilmer, especially his marvellous turn in ‘Tombstone’, (The best Doc Holliday ever!) and his quiet role in ‘Heat’.
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, “Top Gun” was ALL silly and jingoistic! The most outrageous of the testosterone-fuelled 80’s films like “Predator”, “Red Dawn” and the “Rambo” films!

Tiny Tom! 🙂 x
(I didn’t actually slam him, just the chest-thumping film. Don’t forget, I thought he was excellent in ‘Collaterall’. I really did. )

Top Gun is a fantastic film, John. I’m not sure about a sequel. They don’t always work, do they?

Robbie, they don’t very often…that said, Tom Cruise has been pretty smart lately with his films – well, forgetting about “The Mummy” – so we will see! Hope you are staying safe and sane!

Well, I am safe [grin]. I wore a mask today for the first time as I had to go to physiotherapy. I was desperate as I was getting tension headaches. It is not easy being in finance right now.
