The “Bird Box” Blindfold Selfie Phenomenon! Sandra Bullock’s Great “Horror House” Is A Social Media Hit! “Bird Box” Challenges Too!

Time To Close Your Eyes For A “Bird Box” Selfie!

Yes, the latest social media phenomenon is this one: “Bird Box” selfies!

These pics are showing up outside the house used in the great new Netflix horror hit!

Sandra Bullock stars as a woman who must lead a pair of children through a forest and river blindfolded! Why? Because a mysterious force makes people commit suicide when they see it. Trevante Rhodes, Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar, Danielle Macdonald, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, BD Wong, Sarah Paulson, Colson Baker, and John Malkovich also star – a great cast holed up in a house that is now a social media star!

Here is the trailer to “Bird Box”:

The success of the film has led to a Southern California “selfie” phenomenon!

As ABC7 reports:

“Rabid fandom for Netflix’s smash horror hit “Bird Box” has inspired a new online challenge: People wearing blindfolds, just like Sandra Bullock’s character in the horror film.

And many of the fans are also making the pilgrimage to Monrovia – to a house featured in the movie.

Outside the picturesque home people keep stopping by and covering their eyes to take a photo.”

ABC7 goes on to report:

The owner of the 110-year-old home says filming went on for three days inside her home. She says she doesn’t mind its newfound fame or the visitors that have been flocking by all day, every day.

Neighbors, whose homes were also used off-camera during the shoot, don’t seem to mind either.

“It’s kinda funny,” said local resident Mark Christensen. “Some people put the blindfolds on.”

“You can see right now – there’s a whole bunch of people over there and I don’t think there’s a half hour that goes by where there isn’t somebody out here taking pictures.”

While this house will stay iconic to everyone who has seen the film – a huge success out of the gate for Netflix – even more people are doing the “Bird Box Challenge” all around the country!

The Hilarious – And Dangerous – “Bird Box Challenge!”

It’s exactly what you think it is – people blindfold themselves and try to do everyday things, like taking an escalator in a shopping mall!

Netflix has had to warn people against this, as injuries have been reported!

Also, sight-impaired people have complained that it is insensitive to make fun of not being able to see – a very valid point.

There was another huge movie hit this year that also used a similar device:

John Krasinski’s terrific thriller starring his wife Emily Blunt was another horror hit from 2018 that involved a family desperate to survive monster by not making a sound, while “Bird Box” has no sight – what’s next, no smell?

Here is a look at the great thriller “A Quiet Place:”

Let me know if you’ve seen the terrific “Bird Box!”

  1. We just watched “Bird Box” last night and really enjoyed it. So suspenseful! I think the main message of the movie is to have faith, like Sandra Bullock’s character chose to do when she said the the kids “No one is looking”. As far as those folks going around with blindfolds on: I can’t say I wouldn’t do a selfie in front of that house with a blindfold on if I happened to be in the area. But the “Bird Box Challenge” where people are out in public doing things with a blindfold on…that is just not going to end well. And it is completely ignorant about people who are vision-impaired or fully blind. It’s just not a funny joke-more like something from a “Jack Ass” type reality show!

    • I know that a few people were upset about this post – but it wasn’t a film about BLINDNESS it was a movie around being BLINDFOLDED…and I agree that the challenge was stupid – but I didn’t see the connection to being insensitive because that wasn’t the point of the film….that said, a dumb thing to do

  2. Birdbox watched, great cast and good film ..Will there be a sequel? Always a craze they come and go but not without injury to the stupid…

    • Apparently someone was offended by my post because it was insensitive to people with problems seeing – an insult because being are blindfolding themselves for the challenge…except that my story clearly states how authorities and Netflix are coming out strongly against it, and the story in NO WAY makes fun of anyone who is blind or has trouble seeing…I feel bad that someone took it that way but also not sure that my post in any way made fun of blind people….

      • You really cannot second guess some peoples views…myself I thought it was a good post and that there was no intent to cause offence on your part, John ….

      • I was a bit surprised because the film – and the challenge – aren’t about being blind – it’s about being BLINDFOLDED – has NOTHING to do with sight impairment…but it clearly struck a nerve tower because of her own situation – I just didn’t understand why he chastised me for talking about a social media phenomenon related to a film

      • And you probably won’t , John there will always be another interpretation of what we write it just doesn’t make us feel good when we write with no intent to offend and it does.

      • That’s it, I felt bad but always thought it was an unfair attack – nothing in the story discusses anyone pretending to be blind, they were reenacting the conceit of the film – people had to blindfold themselves…thanks for the note

  4. I find it hilarious how much this has blown up over the festive period. Especially seeing so many posts on Facebook from people who don’t watch a lot of films. I enjoyed parts of it but didn’t think it was anything groundbreaking.

  5. This looks good, John, even if it seems like a rip-off of ‘A Quiet Place’, with blindfolds.
But it’s on Netflix, which I don’t have. Sadly. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

  6. I’ve got this set up to watch on Netflix as I really enjoyed the book (forgotten a lot of it as it was a while ago). Not sure what I think about this whole ‘Bird Box Selfie’ jazz, seems rather odd..! x

    • Yes, you never know when a social media stunt goes viral like that and the “Bird Box Challenge” – it’s actually a really good thriller!

      • Looking forward to seeing it! The book was brilliant and with Bullocks in this I’d like to hope it did the author proud.
I did see a funny meme about it, the Bird Box family running blindfolded through the alcohol isles in a supermarket, with a caption about ‘the only way to get through dry January’! x

      • That’s just one of many out there now! I hope you enjoy it, some people are really negative about it – not sure why, it’s got a great cast and tries to stay true to the story
