Talk about a pathway to the top of the world – this is an amazing hiking trail in Hawaii!
The Haʻikū Stairs, also known as the “Stairway to Heaven” or “Haʻikū Ladder”, is a steep hiking trail on the island of Oʻahu, Hawaii.
This hike is almost 4,000 steps – many straight up!
The hike up the Stairway to Heaven is one of the most popular of Oahu’s “forbidden” trails. Yes, forbidden – this path is closed!
First you have to make the 2,120-foot, 3,922-step ascent. But even though the trail is closed today, some avid hikers go anyway because of the spectacular view that awaits from the top.
Here is a video posted by Armando Guajardo on youtube:
These are amazing images, thanks to all of the intrepid hikers and adventurers who took on this challenge and posted their work on the internet…you are taking the rest of us on a great adventure!
Although it’s now considered one of the most difficult hiking trails in the world, that wasn’t always the case. The Haiku Stairs were built by the US Navy during World War II. They were attempting to build a communication system on the island that could be used to send coded messages to the Navy’s ships in the Pacific Ocean.
It wasn’t until 1987 that this treasure became open to the public, and people have come from all over the world to hike up the stairs and to take in the amazing views of O’ahu from the top.
Unfortunately, a severe storm last year caused a landslide that severely damaged parts of the stairs. So, for now, the path is closed…but amazing pictures remain.

Of course, the “Stairway To Heaven” isn’t the only hiking path for true adventurers…

Climb Aboard The “Hua Shan Trail!”
This is 100% true: this is a hiking trail! These are photos of the Hua Shan trail, which crosses over, under and between the five peaks of the 7066 foot Hua Shan mountain in China’s Shaanxi Province!
According to RocketNews24, “the trail is known among tourists as ‘the world’s most dangerous hiking trail’ on account of its steep climbs and sheer drops alongside which narrow paths snake.”
Um, YEAH!
As you can see, they have found a way to make every part of this mountain “hike-able” – as long as you have no fear of heights!

I can understand why they closed it. Imagine someone having a heart attack, or breaking a leg halfway up, or at the top. As an EMT for 22 years, I can only imagine the problems involved in getting someone down from there! Plus it would be just my like to walk up all those stairs, only to find the views obscured by the clouds…
Best wishes, Pete.
Wow, gorgeous views of Oahu! If only I knew last time I was in Oahu, I could have taken the trail. 😉 HA! I thought I was brave for making it to the top of Diamond Head. that will have to do…
I left a comment somewhere, John. It has vanished. A great post.

Well, your medical POV is dead on – and hilarious to imagine all that effort to see only fog!

I wonder if this will ever be re-opened…it is clearly for the most adventurous hikers, but for that view I would try it!
